When you think of engagement photos, do you think of a 30 minute session in a nice park somewhere? If yes, that is what most people do! But you aren't most people, are you? And neither were Carissa and Nicole.
Just like when we work together for your elopement, the goal of your engagement session is to have fun together doing something you love. And that's why if you hire me to do your engagement session, it's always a longer adventure. Instead of running around posing and staring at a camera, I document the two of you relaxing, chatting, and enjoying all the moments with each other.
Whether it's your first time exploring the Adirondacks or a place you come again and again, the goal is to create an adventure experience that is unique to you and your boo. No awkward poses here!
The day began with a hike up this Adirondack mountain to enjoy sunrise together.
Embracing the Wilderness: C & N's Hiking Engagement Photo Session in the Adirondack Mountains
When Nicole and Carissa first contacted me, they told me that the most important thing that they wanted out of this session was to capture the happiness they bring to each other and spend time doing something they love. C & N live a few hours outside of the Adirondack Park and visit at least once a year to hike the High Peaks. They had started the 46er journey together and hiking is a big part of their relationship.
This year, they were going to be up for a week and we planned their engagement session for the middle of their stay. As a hiking guide, I love to hear what clients want to experience and to tailor a hiking agenda for them. In addition to providing them with options for this engagement hiking adventure adventure that hit all their desired criteria (views, fauna to admire on the way up, seclusion), I also gave advice and suggestions for the rest of their stay. Along with some high peaks, I balanced out their itinerary with a few shorter hike suggestions for recovery days.
In their own words:
"We found Molly by searching on an Adirondack Facebook page. Outdoor Chronicles Photography was recommended followed by many likes, so we reached out for a consultation. Molly responded the next day and scheduled a zoom call with us so we could formally meet and greet...Immediately after hanging up we knew we found the right person to capture this special time in our lives.
Not only did Molly provide 3 beautiful locations and hikes but she took into consideration the time, crowd and distance/elevation of each hike. I'm not sure how many photographers are willing to meet you at a trailhead at 4 in the morning but Molly was and came extra prepared. The entire time we spent with her, she made us feel comfortable and ourselves. Her passion for photography and nature definitely showed during our session. We would highly recommend Molly to capture any highlight in your life. Our pictures came out great and we not only will be able to look back and remember this day but the experience we had. Thank you so much, Molly. We are so thankful your name was suggested!"
After a quick change of clothing, it was time to play a bit on the summit.

Tips and Tricks for a Successful Outdoor Engagement Session in the Adirondack Mountains
A successful adventure photography engagement session requires a blend of careful planning, flexibility, and spirit of fun. Start by choosing an experienced adventure photographer who can guide you through the process and capture stunning images even in challenging environments. Having local expertise is key, as the trails change drastically year over year due to weather conditions. Heck, conditions change every week! We also advise you on the best trails to hike to have a good experience outdoors.
Dress comfortably for the terrain and weather, but also consider outfits that complement the natural surroundings. If its a longer hike, I typically encourage folks to hike up in their hiking gear and change at the top. This helps you stay comfortable and avoid sweat stains. For your outfit change, it's still important to think about weather! Even in the summer months, it can be 30 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are wearing a dress, I recommend having a pair of skin-colored leggings just in case.
Pack essentials like water, snacks, and extra layers. Remember, this is a hike as well as a photo session! I'll bring all the safety gear, so you can keep your load light.
Lastly, embrace the unexpected. The best photos often come from spontaneous moments, so be open to exploring off the beaten path or getting a little dirty. Just focus on enjoying the experience together, and let your love shine through in the photos.
Why Choose an a Hiking Guide to Photograph Your Engagement Session?
Choosing a licensed hiking guide (ahem...like me!) with local knowledge for your adventure photo session offers several key benefits:
Safety: A licensed guide is trained in safety protocols, first aid, and emergency response. We know the terrain very well and can help you navigate safely, especially in potentially hazardous areas.
Local Knowledge: Guides with local knowledge can lead you to the most picturesque spots that you might not find on your own. We also know the best times to visit for optimal lighting, less crowd, and more.
Logistical Ease: A local guide can handle logistics like permits, trailhead transportation, and equipment needs, allowing you to focus on enjoying the experience.
Environmental Respect: Licensed guides are often trained in Leave No Trace principles, ensuring that your photo session doesn't harm the natural environment. You never know what you don't know and I'm always here to educate in a fun and easy manner.
Storytelling: Lastly, we can add depth to your photos by sharing stories or facts about the area, giving a richer context to your images. I personally love to point out unique plants and fungi!
Remember, your adventure photo session is not just about getting great shots, it's also about the overall experience. A knowledgeable local guide can significantly enhance this experience.
